INTRODUCTION
The Waking of a Nation —
Alex Reece as General Dyer
Alex Reece plays Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer in Ram Madhvani’s 2025 historical drama The Waking of a Nation. The SonyLIV series reimagines the events surrounding the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the inquiry that followed.
THE ROLE
Playing Dyer demanded authority, control and an unflinching presence. For Alex, the work also required months of research and a clear distinction between understanding a character’s thinking and excusing his actions.

ARAM NAGAR, THREE YEARS EARLIER
A casting visit.
A story about a motorcycle.
Three years before filming, I walked into casting director Abhimanyu Ray’s office while making my rounds in Aram Nagar. He was discussing a project that needed an English motorcyclist and asked whether I could ride.
I told him about an Enfield Bullet I had bought in India around 2005. I had no formal training or licence, but I rode it for thousands of miles: from Kerala to Rameswaram, across to Hampi, north through Hyderabad and Varanasi, and eventually to Delhi.
At Rameswaram, a friend took me through the temple wells and gave me holy water from the final well to carry to Varanasi along the old pilgrimage route. The journey became an act of adventure, faith and sheer persistence.
Abhimanyu later said he remembered something military in me: a willingness to move forward, confront obstacles and show rather less fear than might be sensible.
Casting and preparation
FIVE AUDITIONS. THREE MONTHS OF RESEARCH.
Remembered
for the role.
When Ram Madhvani began casting The Waking of a Nation, Abhimanyu immediately thought of me. His confidence did not remove the need to prove it: I went through around five auditions over a three-month process.
The early auditions included Hindi dialogue. The Hunter Commission interrogation was initially conceived in Hindi before being filmed in English—a change I regretted because I had been looking forward to working through those Hindi scenes.
I used those months to research the colonial period in depth: Indian history, British military life, regimental cultures, and the complicated bonds of duty, hierarchy and loyalty between British officers and Indian soldiers.
By the time filming began in Amritsar, I had spent long enough with the material to enter the character with confidence—and to argue for the internal logic behind him.
Filming Jallianwala Bagh
THE DAY THE ROLE BROKE THROUGH
The rifles sounded real.
The falling children felt real.
I had visited the real Jallianwala Bagh during my research. I had seen the bullet marks and read the testimony. Even so, I was not prepared for what the re-creation would do to me.
On the day of the massacre sequence, I marched the troops into position as Dyer and ordered them to fire. I directed the line towards people trying to escape over a wall and towards those seeking cover near the well.
I held the character until the boys in the crowd began to fall—children of seven or eight, ten, twelve or thirteen. I knew it was a performance, but the rifles, the sound and the acting made the history suddenly immediate.
I finished the scene, returned to my trailer, closed the door and cried. I have played terrible men and found ways into their thinking before. That day was different. Seeing those innocent children fall broke through every layer of preparation.
Finding the character
UNDERSTANDING IS NOT ABSOLUTION
Beyond a simple
portrait of a villain.
Working with Ram Madhvani was one of the great privileges of my life. I had immersed myself so deeply in Dyer’s worldview that I often debated the writers about where the character believed he was coming from.
I did not want to excuse him or diminish the horror of what happened. I wanted to understand the beliefs, loyalties and fears through which he justified himself. That distinction mattered: without it, I would only be indicating a villain rather than inhabiting a human being capable of a monstrous act.
The research, the debate and the emotional cost of the massacre sequence made this one of the most demanding roles I have played—and one of the greatest privileges of my career.
